THE UNDERDOGS

Every sport has an underdog and racing is no different. Here we'll look at the underdogs, their progress, and how they're hanging with the big dogs.

This week's Underdog is Kevin Lepage. Kevin has had some bad luck with his various rides in the past. When he drove the #16 for Roush, he was like the red-headed step-child compared to his team mates. He was in and out of various cars because of  money. This season, he's driving the #37 car. Right now, they're having sponsor trouble and are behind schedule because of the changes in the cars. Kevin will have Ernie Elliott engines powering his ride this season. Anyone familiar with what Ernie did for his brother Bill Elliott knows he builds some of the best engines around. Kevin will have to make the field on speed since they finished below the magic 35th position last season. Will this be a disadvantage ? Not necssarily. Kevin could very well end up as a pole sitter because of the rule change. And we hope he does get a pole or two to make him eligible for the non-points events. Kevin Lepage still doesn't have a sponsor for his Busch car for a limited schedule so he has cars that are race ready that he can sell or lease. Kevin is also hoping for a Busch or Truck ride on a limited schedule basis for 2005. The single car teams are at a big disadvantage to the multi-car super teams, but with the right sponsor behind him, Kevin Lepage could very well show that this underdog has got a bite.

What do the fans think ?

Kevin has some very loyal and supportive fans. Despite everything you hear about other driver's fans, Kevin's are probably some of the most supportive and gracious fans out there. You've got to love them for their dedication.

  THE CURSED CAR

The #16 car appears to have had some kind of curse on it for both Kevin and it's previous driver, Ted Musgrave.

This is a driver's card of Kevin and the #16 car.

  Another Cursed Car ?

It seems like every driver who drove the #4 after Sterling Marlin has had nothing but bad luck. Kevin was in and out of this car a couple of times and finally replaced over a money issue. His replacement, Jimmy Spencer, didn't fair any better than Kevin did. The #4 car may not be back this season due to sponsor uncertainties.
